A Life Dedicated to Justice and Human Rights
Raina Luff, born on September 13, 1933, in Genoa, Italy, and a British national, lived a life of unwavering commitment to justice, education, and human rights. A brilliant legal expert with dual law degrees from Italy and Belgium, Raina began her career in Brussels, passionately advocating for human rights and refugees. Her work later brought her to post-conflict nations, including Rwanda, where she joined the United Nations in 1995. In Rwanda, Raina played a critical role in rebuilding the judicial system after the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, training legal professionals, supporting investigations, and providing expert guidance.
A Visionary Educator
Raina’s love for education was evident throughout her life. She taught at the National University of Rwanda and Institut Catholique de Kabgayi, inspiring and mentoring future legal professionals. Her dedication to education extended beyond the classroom, as she guided students in their academic and personal growth.
In 2006, Raina co-founded Ahazaza Independent School in Muhanga, Rwanda, in collaboration with local families. Her vision was to provide children with a stronger foundation and brighter opportunities. Starting with a single classroom, two teachers, and twelve students, the school grew under her leadership into a highly respected Cambridge International School with over 500 students.

A Legacy of Inclusion and Excellence
Ahazaza grew into a beacon of hope, nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and diversity. The school provides tuition-free scholarships to some students, ensuring inclusivity, and every graduate leaves fluent in English, French, and Kinyarwanda. Students have consistently excelled in Cambridge exams, and the school has incorporated DELF exams to strengthen proficiency in French. Additionally, Ahazaza dedicates weekly hours to teaching Rwandan culture through traditional dance, Intore, and other cultural activities. Raina’s unwavering dedication to shaping future leaders established the school as a model of excellence and inclusion.

Raina passed away on December 11, 2024, leaving an indelible mark on Rwanda and beyond. Her Children: Richard, Victoria, and David remember her as a compassionate and determined woman whose values of tolerance and respect inspired all who knew her.
